![]() ![]() Mounted on the door are four clock dials with movements behind them. The frequency of the generated supply was exactly 50Hz when the two clock faces indicated the same time. The operator would endeavour to keep the two hands moving in unison by regulating the flow of steam to the engine. ![]() The speed of the generators would then if necessary be minutely adjusted (usually in the middle of the night) to bring the electric clock to indicate the exact correct time. Isolated power stations like the one at Tamworth fine-tuned their supply frequency by checking the time indication on an electric clock (the red one, an indication of supply frequency) against an accurate mechanical clock (the black one) whose time was verified each day at one pm against international time "pips" through the telephone. This example is from the 1922 Tamworth Power Station in Marius Street. Smith’s Synchronome Master Frequency Control Clock Serial No 21258 consists of an accurate pendulum clockwork timepiece and a frequency dependent synchronous electric clock in a maple wooden case.
